Email from Becky

I received an email from Becky today. I wanted to post what she had to say:

"The past 3 days have been really encouraging. Today has been a little harder with meal time. I haven't boosted for a few days, and really pushing through. However, I am overwhelmed with how much I have to eat each meal and throughout the day. I am trying to remember my goals of recovery and push through. Your and everyone prayers and support help to keep me moving forward. Let everyone know I am praying and missing them. I put in a pass order for the weekend today and will let you know soon what happens. I hope to come home on Sunday!"

Becky is learning so much. On Sunday I went to visit her. We had a great visit. As we were sitting there I loved watching Becky laugh and smile with us. It brought tears to my eyes to see her countenance shine. I know Becky is learning so much, but I too have learned so much from her. We are excited to see her this weekend!

A letter from Becky

Dear Becky's Body,

I am grateful for your astonishing functions and abilities. Thinking how all the cells and body parts work together enthralls my mind. Starting from the outside in I want to express my gratitude for your empowerment of my spirit to experience life.

Since I was little I have had to take extra care of my skin, which has at times been hard. These experiences have helped me develop a greater appreciation for its function. I am grateful for the protection it provides me from infections. My skin also gives me the power to touch and feel the world around me. I can feel gentle breezes, soft kisses, tiny bumps of a basketball, grass on my feet, and best of all sweet hugs from those I love.

I am grateful for the strength and stability of my bones and muscles. With my bones and muscles, I am blessed with movement and energy to explore. I can run races, garden with my grandma, jump rope with my students, take walks with Nelson, and carry a baby.

My arms and hands empower me with the opportunity to serve and help others. A person's hands can describe a lot about who they are and their personality. I want my hands to emulate compassion, love, and service. Once of my favorite things to do that gives me peace and comfort is to hold the hands of those I love. It seems as though their love passes through our hands and strengthens me.

I am grateful for my brain and its ability to think and learn. I love to learn new and exciting things about the world, especially with my students. It amazes me the connections the brain can make to previous ideas and memories. I am grateful for my memories because the provide such joy and strength in my life. In looking and learning from memories, I can see the growth and change of myself.

Thank you for my 5 senses, sight, sounds, taste, smell, and touch. With these powers I am able to experience my surroundings. I love seeing God's beautiful creations, hearing children laugh, and families visit together. Especially at this time in my life, I am learning to appreciate my sense of taste. I am grateful for the food that nourishes my body. I am grateful to smell flowers, fresh rain, cinnamon, homemade cookies, and home. Thank you for the power of touch and the healing in provides.

Thank you for my heart and its ability to love and be loved. I am amazed at its powerhouse ability to enliven the body. It keeps everything moving and working. I am grateful for all my other internal organs and the ability to strength it provides to live.

I am grateful for the power of divine creation. I am excited to one day have the opportunity to have a baby. TO be a mother is one of my greatest desires. I hope to care for and teach my children to love themselves and others.

As I continue to progress through the recovery process, I am developing a greater sense of gratitude for you. I am grateful for your function and abilities. I am going to strive to take care of you better to keep healthy and strong. In doing so I know I will be able to be myself and pursue my passions and goals.

Thank you,
Becky

Becky's Family Letter

Nelson received a letter from Becky today.

January 11, 2010

Dr. Berrett led spirituality group again today. We talked about the power of responsibility. In choosing to take responsibility for our actions, we are empowered to fight, overcome and improve. We did an exercise that gave me some insight into the power of agency. With a partner we expressed for 1 to 2 minutes all the things we couldn't do by saying "I can't...." It was frustrating and demobilizing saying this. Then Dr. Berrett asked us to repeat the same list but to change the list and begin with "I won't..." In doing this exercise it helped me realize things I can and can't control. After this exercise, we expressed something we "have to" do and then said the same thing beginning with "I choose" to...Just like the "I won't" statements the "I choose" statements brought feelings of responsibility and power. I realize that God empowers us as we use faith and take responsibility to follow him.

In my therapy session with Dr. Julie we talked about my quest to discover myself. She talked about this quest is not to be perfect, but to be whole. As we talked I thought about the power of the Atonement. I remember learning that this word means "at one with God." As Dr. Julie was talking I thought about how the Atonement allowed the Savior to experience all the hardships, sicknesses, trials, and weaknesses we face. He was perfect and through His grace and mercy we can become whole again. I am so grateful for the knowledge of the atonement and the peace it brings. He is there to comfort me in times of sorrow and loneliness. Even though the process of recovery is hard, I know it will help me become more whole.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell said in an Ensign article this month "One's life...cannot be both faith filled and stress free...Therefore how can you and I really expect to glide naively throughout life as if to say 'Lord, give me the experience, but not the grief, not sorrow, not pain, not opposition, not betrayal, and certainly not to be forsaken. Keep from me, Lord, all those experiences which made Thee what Thou art. Then let me come and dwell with Thee and fully share Thy joy.' Real faith is required to ensure this necessary but painful development process."

I liked this quote because through life's hardships I'll be able to become more whole. It is a hard process. Some parts of the day are harder than others. The nights are especially hard because I wish I were home. I am so grateful for all your letters of love and encouragement. They mean the world to me. I think and pray for you all each day and night. Thanks for all your love.

I Love You!
Love, Becky
